Thanx for the quick response. I'm using the black glassy theme. But there are some pixels on the right hand side that shouldn't be there. Otherwise a good first version.

I prefer your 'ordinary dust theme' which has a black background for the title. Because I like the dust-theme and your theme blends well with it. Could you make a version that combines the two: a black title background (as in the dust theme) and a black glass-like background for the rest (as in your 'ordinary black glass'-theme)

Yes, I know I'm not an easy customer... - Jul 26 2010

A fine piece of art!

Very usable, clear and original and works with lots of themes... Even when putting the buttons on the left side.

Is this your own work? if so, great job done. - Mar 27 2010

Some like them big, the other small.

It has not been easy, rewriting the new wave-theme, and I'm having problems reducing the space between the buttons. That's why the buttons are the given size.

Anyone familiar with the New Wave Metacity theme and can help me on that issue?

Well I'll be updating the theme shortly with a slightly darker orange (E96336) for the menu-items (your proposed color is a bit to dark for me) and changed the style of the menu-items to be more flat. Which gives it a smoother look.

I usually work with pixmaps-themes. These are easier to work with because you can use images to get where you want.

So I'm a bit in the dark here. This is the first time I'm playing with the murrine-theme. And I do not know how to add what you've proposed...

- Mar 08 2010
Well the new 'default'-colors are disputable, but they are an improvement. I do not know anybody that actually liked the former brown-orange theme.

This theme uses the shiki-wise GTK-theme and the new-wave-metacity to get the best compatibility on any application.

There are a lot of theme's out here that fail miserably on that issue. - Mar 07 2010

Could you do the same (placing everything to the left) with my black theme?

just dowload Moz theme van Krig and look in the file. You will see he used a richt-top-frame background for the shaded part under the buttons.
- Jan 05 2010
great job !

I've been meddling with Krig's theme and this is the result:

- Jan 04 2010
Krig has given us a new year's gift by presenting his Moz-style theme here on gnome-look !

It captures almost exactly my thoughts about this theme here.

I think we should use this work to perfect it even more.
- Jan 04 2010
Please work on it Padster and Qdark, you obviously have more experience with it then I. - Jan 03 2010
A very good job done !

Yet, as I commented, your emerald theme would perhaps look better with the button I made earlier. You will need to adjust the size of my button but I think it would work nicely.

I'm still looking for a good solution for a metacity-theme however...

Thanks for the work you've done already !
- Jan 03 2010
I would still prefer some roundiness on the sides. It is possible (as in my bad mock-up) but you need to separate the buttons more in the XML-file so there is a visible blanc area - Jan 02 2010
I decided it's time for some serious work on my part:

Here's the close button( it's not finished yet, extension on both sides I need to do)

http://kimag.es/view/65846184.png - Jan 02 2010
I've added a badly made mock-up to show if it is possible to make these as stand-alone buttons.

The closebutton has an extension at both sides. - Jan 02 2010
The most mac-lookalike-themes do not have the 'restore-button' so it is in fact necessary to use a metacity theme that uses the restore-button and uses pixmaps for the graphics.

So lets see what you can come up with if you use a different metacity theme as the base.

About the buttons: the 'close'-button needs to be just the round button (nothing added to it), in fact each button needs to look good as a stand-alone button, because, as you pointed out already, they sometimes are used seperately.

So, is my mockup possible? I do not think so. You will need to make new graphical buttons that somehow match my mockup, but can be used seperately.

'Why easy when it you can do it in a difficult manner' is a much used phrase in Belgium... - Jan 02 2010
Extra note: You cannot change the order of the buttons in the metacity theme itself because (correct me if I'm wrong here) the standard-layout is set by default. - Jan 01 2010
my mock-up is not that good.

Basically the button-order stays the same (minimize, maximize/restore,close).

For the first button (minimize to the taskbar) you can use the small arrow (pointing down)

For the second button (maximize: you can use the larger arrow pointing upwards/ the restore-button is the same but pointing downwards (you will have to make that too)

The third button is the close-button.

So my mock-up is the situation where the window is maximized, thus showing the 'restore-button'in the midlle (arrow pointing down).

If you have other suggestions please tell me... - Jan 01 2010
looks promissing. Does it work as a metacity theme?

I think it would be better with more shade around the buttons (as in the mock-up picture) Also the arrow and the cross should be more 'pressed' into the background.

I'm glad with the work sofar!

But it's not 'finished' as yet...
- Jan 01 2010
If you take a look at my work here at gnomelook you will see that I'm not interested in yet another mac theme. The firefox-buttons on the Mac-version I happen to like.

Yet they do not look anything like the typical mac-buttons.

That's why I would like to see those buttons used in the same manner (with a larger close-button instead) on a metacity theme.

The challenge is in trying to see if it is possible.

So overcome your dislike and show me your ability to make this theme... - Dec 31 2009

Thanks for making an emerald theme of my mock-up, looks good. I'm not satisfied with the png you use for the close button.

I think the 'cross' is to big

Could you use this one?

Also added the silver theme here at gnome-look.

Could you make a GTK-theme for the silver edition? It is not the same as for the blue theme. For example the buttons are blue-bordered instead of orange in true Windows XP. The panel is silver.... - Mar 11 2009
I made an exact replica of the genuin Windows XP blue theme. See here at gnome-look as 'WinXP blue metacity'; following the comments on your theme I adapted the lunacity theme.

- Mar 11 2009
I do not normally get into 'windows-lookealikes' (see my other work here in gnome look) but since there is apparently nobody that took the effort to make a decent replication of the typical Windows-borders I simply modified the lunacity-theme a bit to get a better match.

I have no intention to put more effort into other variants... That I leave to other more interested themers out there.

After you have extracted the downloaded file twice (yes twice!) you will have a file. Within that file you have the AluChrystalGTKtheme.targz. Drag and drop that into the system/preferences/appearance -window. Then select the theme.
The emerald theme needs to be 'imported' by the emerald-theme manager (use synaptic to install this application if you do not have it yet.) - Nov 13 2008
There was an error in the GTKRC-file that produced the said error. This is solved now with version 2.0 - Nov 13 2008

There are themes that succeed in blending the menubar with the titlebar. Just take a look at the SlicknesS-theme or the 'UbuntuNextG'-theme.

The problem is your GTKRC-theme uses a single window-bg, while the mentioned themes have multiple backgrounds.

This allows them to use a separate background for the menubar. And this is the key to make it blend with the titlebar. - Nov 07 2008
correction: the blue shadow I was talking about has nothing to do with your theme, so no worries ! - Nov 07 2008
As a desktopthemer myself I can appreciate a good theme - and this is a good theme - because you seem to have found an answer to most problems that occur with black themes. Firefox works well with this theme which is rarely the case with black themes. So congratulations! But there is always a "but': I do not like the blue shadows. I'm not a fan of the metacity theme. Personally I do not make metacity-themes anymore because it is a hassle and because most people use compiz and emerald themes. (Most people interested in changing the looks of the gnome desktop anyway) You should try making emerald-themes. They are a lot more flexible and easier to combine. I see that you have used a metallic background. If you look at my theme (Aluchrystal) you will see that I have also used a metallic background for the GTK-theme AND the Emerald theme. So try making an Emerald-theme with the same black metallic background with for example black shiny min-max-restore buttons should give your theme a more consistent look.

I've you like I will give it a try. But I'd prefer it that you learn it yourself...

that"s why I called it an experiment. But as such it does work- using a pixmap for the window-background - but not as a transparency-replacer. The clue is findong a nice background that fits nicely at any resolution.

By the way: my Aluchristal-theme that I uploaded recently uses the same trick by using a metallic background. - Nov 06 2008

Make sure that you untar the file twice! Because deviantart tars it again...
So after the first untar you get something like 'GoogleGnomePack.tar' Then untar it again, and look then in the file for the GTK-theme. - Oct 29 2008
