For applying GDM themes, there is this tool:

Note Ubuntu uses LightDM, so you would need to switch to GDM first to use GDM themes:

This theme is great! One question though - how do you stop the word Linux from displaying above the login box?
This annoyed me too, the way to fix the 'linux' is open the .tar.gz file and edit simple_ubuntu_black-nld.xml. You need to find '%s' near the bottom and remove that or replace it with whatever you want written up the top. Then save and uninstall and reinstall the theme and presto it's gone.
And for some very annoying reason, I'm very picky about themes and the such. This one meets my taste where I like traditional designs with a touch of ecclectism which look very professional. I just don't know why the word "Linux" appears above the text box and in the middle. It just looks so out of place. Without that detail, this theme would be very close to perfect for me.
hi. good job on the theme. i really like it. and use it on more than one comp. i really like that background and wanted to use it on my gnome desktop. do you know where i could get it if its not too much of a hassle? thanks. keep up the good work.
Thanks for the feedback! I've put the background on the following link; http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=41522

There are many "faults" in your themes (i don't know if faults is the good word) * The right shade pile up the right rectangle * "Ubuntu" is a little bit too down * Usercase is stretched, use a black rectangle is more useful But the theme is good everthless
