I like idea to get more eyecandy but it takes too much space.
And i dont like idea of that you dont see addressbar what informs you all the time where you are and you can focus there bu ctrl+L and give other directiry without mouse.

And i think biggest thing what keeps KDE users to love KDE is that you can customize almoust everything what you see and more.

Thats reason i always turn back to KDE after trying to use Gnome because i just cant edit things to act how i like.

Thats why keep more options to change way of look of your ideas, add more screenshots to show what kind options idea can offer.

ps. one reason too why i cant stand windows anymore is that you cant customize behavior or look.

I think this design has one big flaw (apart from the toolbar, that should at least be movable): the big preview. but what if you put actions there? a 'play' button for media, meta-data from tenor, things like that? using clever search technics we won't to devote as much space to the 'item-view' as we do now, as there won't be very many (if the search works fine). so we can devote more space to individual information. make biger icons, with 'actions' buttons on them, and make bigger information spaces like here, with information like 'this is where this file came from' and stuff like that.

Hey stoned, I think you got a great idea! Bigger icons with basic actions superimposed on them as little icons! Let's think about an image with a little eye or a little looking glass on it, if you click it, the image is opened in full-window mode. Next there's a stencil icon and if you click it the image is directly opened in your default paint app, and so on with relevant actions for every mimetype.

Don't know, maybe no one will like it, but I think it could be an improvement on the "lets get rid of the sidebar" quest :)

well, the idea is not mine, remind you :D

but it is great. if we increase the size of the icons to 128x128 (yeah, huge) they consist of 4 parts, each as big as one icon now. so it's easy to ad (maybe only on mouse-over) actionbuttons.

and we should get rid of the sidebar indeed, i'd rather see it on bottom (this IS a good point in vista. most ppl rather waste some vertical space, and keep their horizontal... and it can be used more efficiently, imho).

I must disagree. I think most people prefer vertical space, because you can have e.g. a longer file list or more text lines.

But the key here is customizing. How about a box, containing the additional info, that you can drag to different areas of the window, e.g. to the left or to the bottom? This info-box would then rearrange it's information in a way that fits to the position, in this example there would be two modes, vertical and horizontal.

That way everyone can use the infobox the way he likes it ;).

i think it depends on the application. in a word processor, i love all space i can get, but yes, mostly vertical. but in a filemanager, the sidebar is just not usefull, while the same space horizontal could be much more usefull.

Personally I like it. Looking good is as important to adoption of KDE as its functionality. Besides, anything like this would have to be an optional view. So, if you prefer the traditional file manager look, you'll have it.

This *might* look good, but this is non-functional and irrational waste of space. The same info is displayed in tooltips w/o this huge panel taking almost 1/3 of the screen. If vista looks like this, I'm sorry for its future users.

You should propose your idea to kde-artists.org .
Seems to be nice, and they like it to see new ideas :-)

I know this is not a finished product but I don't care for the design. It simply uses too much screen space.

I prefer the same functionality in a side panel like can be done with metabar.

You can collapse the sections you don't care to see.

Metabar with long filenames consumes much more space if it is on the left side of window.

Report

It doesn't on mine.
It uses the same ... method as MacOS

eg "This is a very long filename.mp3"
becomes something like"This is a...name.mp3"

I'm still use metabar 0.7. Looks like this was a bug introduced in 0.8. This is a bug, not what the default behaviour should be.

I will say that this is a vista ripoff.. however there are some points to it that I did like.
this one being it.
I like the sidebar idea
I like the idea of the preview on the top.
I don't like that the preview takes up the entire width.
I don't like that the menus are below the toolbars. If you want this then put it in to make it so the menus are a type of toolbar so you can move them or an option ;)

the konq icon you have look very nice I'd submit that one to be the default!

The icon highlight mockup I like a lot as well. rounded edges, centered text

But please wait at least beta2 before starting with Vista rip-off

Not a vista Rip-off. M$ sucks. It's based on metabar konqueror plugin.

this is a raelly wonderful idea for a futuer version of konqueror. It really needs simplified in order to be useful. You should consider psting this mockup to kde-artists.org

I would like to see the same changes in PLastic too, to be exact, "better dotted drag placeholders", "simple status bar" and no "frame in frame".

They're two different things, one is the KDE Improvement and the other one it's only a Style for kde, if you mean with your post that's a good combination, then my two thumbs up(in my kde i've the same combination) ;)
