My distro is Debian and I rcommend OpenSUSE to newcomers. The only thing I have against Ubuntu is that even some of their basic packages, like gtk, are hacked for use in Ubuntu. A KDE, Qt or GTK theme that works in all distros may show false problems in Ubuntu because of that. IMO Ubuntu doesn't provide a standard Linux experience.
I use Sabayon Linux and Mageia. Most things i want is in a repo or you can get the sourcecode.
Maybe they should do it like Archlinux with AUR/yaourt did.
So they can upload their source here and simultaneously add their stuff in the *buntu user repo. Problem solved? o.0
For the same reason people target Windows when making software. Ubuntu has the biggest target base out of all the distros.
Are you referring to content here on gnome look as well?
I package everything and write instructions on installation specifically for Ubuntu because it's just what I use, as does the majority of the users who come one here. The people who produce content on here want the most downloads as possible so there's no way in hell we're going to write out instructions for Arch or Fedora only and leave the Ubuntu users hanging.

If they want to give special support to Ubuntu so is it ok, but they should upload an archive like .tar.gz for people who are using one of the many other distributions or one of the BSD's.

2.3. If you really really like and want so badly some piece of OSS, you are free to compile it yourself for _any_ platform it is designed for and suits your needs.
2.4. If certain OSS is not available precompiled for your system of choice, definitely does not mean that you have to bark against Ubuntu dev's for that. They are doing _their_ job very well and what you want is so not their job's object!

So, what are you? Just another heater? We wanted more than Windows - we got it. We wanted more just some plain Linux distribution - here you go. This a Top-five playing song. We actually have around 400 different nouances of Linux-Kernel-Based-Operating-Systems. Most of them have one or more Window Managers and at least one packaging system tailored for their specific monolithic filesystem setups.
At the opposite side, Windows is one operating system, limityed to one window manager and one filesystem (organized with as near as no restricted order).
You positively have to consider every "distro" as a particular operating system with its rules.
There are two ways to get an application to run on a particular distro:
a) installing it from the distro's repository with the appropriate package manager; if the application is missing you have to ask the community or the developer to package it or you can do it by yourself;
b) getting the sources from the developer and compiling them by yourself as the developer instructs; take in mind that the developer can't have the necessary know-how for compiling his application on every operating system!
The reason most applications are Ubuntu ready is very simple, Ubuntu is the most spread Linux Kernel Based Operating System! and its community is very large so most developers will service their applications for this O.S..

Apart from this I sustain that developers should develop their applications without writing code working with one window manager only or with a particular filesystem organisation in mind.

Fedora 16 (Verne), but I have also used openSUSE, Mandriva, and FreeBSD. I've also played with SLAX, Sabayon, and (sadly) Ubuntu.
