Description:

MPlayerThumbs is a video thumbnail generator for KDE file managers (Konqueror, Dolphin, ...) , now available also for KDE 4.
It needs mplayer (of course) to generate thumbnails, and it contains no linking to any library, so in a x86_64 system you can freely use the 32bit mplayer binary with win32codecs by configuring the application launching the mplayerthumbsconfig helper application.
It catches a random frame from 15% to 70%, checking also how contrasted is the image, and dropping bad frames.

Okay, am I the only one that Konqueror is more apt at utilizing this than Dolphin????

As an example, one dir with 35 relatively short movies in Dolphin...if I were lucky 15 of those got thumbnails. In Konqueror, everyone but two did (the two exceptions were one .flv and one .wmv). Back to Dolphin I could see the thumbnails konqueror + mplayerthumbs had created.

And I can view all files just fine using mplayer.

I just don't get it. (Using OpenSuse 11, KDE 4.1, mplayerthumbs installed from the packman repo).

I'm able to compile and install deb as per instructions in kubuntu forums, but no previews are generated. The "prefix" comment made by another user lacks context so I'm very unsure what to do with that. I followed the instructions on the forum (which weren't entirely complete as they skipped the step of installing the kde4-devel packages).

I installed on kde4 successfully.
How to get dolphin generate previews?

Better late than never.

You can find compilation example and links to the deb's (i386) from the Kubuntu Forums (http://www.kubuntuforums.net/)

Kubuntu Forums > General > Miscellaneous Linux Info > Audio/Video > Video Preview
(http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3095710.0)

There is also mplayerthumbs_1.1-1_i386.deb. Compiled in the Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex alpha-2, KDE 4.1 RC1

Video previews on KDE4 were missed.
I remember that on KDE3 mplayerthumbs used to put some film border around the preview which looked very good.

Thanks,

Josep

Maybe because it's only for kde4?
Grab the old version (0.5) for kde3.

You're probably missing some header (development) packages, the kde3 application is still compiling fine here.

that's a bit peculiar. i suppose now i'll have to read the rest of the description, meanie.

eh, i've read further, and i guess i won't be using it, if it only needed the mplayer codecs, and not mplayer itself, i'd grab.

Hi !
J've changed a little thing to your mplayerthumbs :
I've taken the .png from xine thumbnails.
This is the result :
perhaps you want to upload this ?
what do you think about that ?

This isn't a big deal, but its really funny: I have a file called Donnie.Darko.The.Directors.Cut.2001.CD1.XviD.Kasset
and mplayerThumbs generated a really strange looking preview for it (its a subtitle file). The preview was all pink and corrupted... it was weird.

My mistake, the file was calDonnie.Darko.The.Directors.Cut.2001.CD1.XviD.Kasset.subled

Thx for this usefull work :-)

I've noticed some kind of problem when there's broken video files : in such a case, mplayer has to rebuild index and it takes a loooot of cpu & time.
Considering that such files could be there sometimes, i think a pre-detection of theses would be great to avoid this.
Because even if konqueror is closed, the index-generation is still running until the end, and it could be quite boring particulary when the file is about 700 mb and read from some nfs mounted disk....

This plugin is awesome. After hours of attempting to get the xine plugin working (which used to work and then mysteriously stopped), I installed this, and it is indeed a lot faster (plus it actually works).
