Description:

I really like klik and really think it is a great asset to Linux. I had some free time today and came up with a redesign of the klik site.

The other parts of the site would work like a file manager. On the homepage, there might be a list of new apps and under it, icons for each category. Clicking on a category will take you to a new page with icons for each app available in that category. Also, it would be cool to be able to sort the apps based on popularity or kliks (instead of just alphabetically).

If the klik team wants to use it, it would be an honour. If they want me to actually make it into an html file, I'd be willing to do that too.

So, tell me what you think!

UPDATE: Last night, I wrote a short script to run a mockup klik site. Try it out if you have a server with PHP and MySQL to see what the other parts of the skin could look like. Just put the klik folder in your htdocs folder and create a mysql database named "klik" and use the dump to fill it. (change the top of index.php to set your mysql username and password).

Hi, this is probono from the klik team. Thanks for your great ideas for the klik site. In fact, we have been considering a major redesign of the site for quite some time.

One thing that would be indeed a big step forward (besides the design itself) would be a hierarchical classification system for the applications, like "Internet > Browsers > Firefox" or "Graphics > Vector > Inkscape". Unfortunately, I don't know how to implement this without manually categorizing thousands of applications. Is there an existing classification system that actually makes sense?

As for the redesigning of the site, there is a couple of things we need to sort out on the klik server itself (e.g., the classification hierarchy system, more international package descriptions and a way to enter them if they don't exist yet), but then we're open to your suggestions.

Well, for the descriptions, you could possibly write a script to fetch the Wikipedia article on the app (i.e. GIMP -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_GIMP). For other languages, change the prefix (i.e. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_GIMP).

a) sorry for the double-post (now triple)
b) nevermind the wikipedia thing. you can just use freshmeat.net:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/$project_name:

i.e. GIMP

http://freshmeat.net/projects/gimp

then run an eregi to extract something like this:

About:
GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, a image format converter, etc.

here is the php code i came up with (not sure if it is the most efficient, but it works).

[?php
$app = "kde";
$file = "http://freshmeat.net/projects/$app";
$link = fopen($file, "r");

if ($link) {
while (!feof($link)) {
$buffer = fgets($link);
$content .= $buffer;
}
fclose($link);
}

$about = explode("\n", $content);

$reading = 0;

foreach($about as $k=>$v){
if($reading == 1){
if(!eregi("\", $v)){
echo $v;
}else{
break;
}
}elseif(eregi("About:", $v)){
echo $v;
$reading = 1;
}
}
?]

klik is really cool - but yeah, their site needs some redesigning.
When I saw your design I wanted to try making my own. Here it is:
http://img346.imageshack.us/img346/2447/klik49en.png

Ok, some comments:
- OMG it's a deviantART ripoff!
True :/. I really like dA's design, it inspired me to do this. It's not ok? Then I'm sorry.
But I just want to say, that the colours should be like the colours shown in the picture! I don't know what colours klik "prefers", so I simply didn't add any colours.

- There are some problems with this design.
1. I don't know where to put the ads.
2. Stats/links? How should it look like - maybe in a table?
3. Logo?

- The "Download" icon is from the nuoveXT icon theme: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=26449

chill out man ;) I mean, maybe the description isn't all that, but the idea is nice. But this basically allready exists: when you open an rpm in konqueror (at least in my suse distro) you see a similar screen.
