McOS-themes

(Formerly known as Gnome-OSC-themes)

This is a repository that contains Mac OS-themes for the Linux-Gnome desktop made by PaulXFCE (myself)

These are high end and thorougly developed GTK-themes for the gnome desktop (3.20+ through 3.28) that interpretes the Mac Os themes to the gnome-environment.

In the latest version (McOS-MJV) I've modernized it in every little detail. There is nothing (not a single item) that is not new. Resulting in a completely rewritten GTK.CSS-file. it also contains the dark-mode (for applications that use it)

The dark-mode is also available as a seperate theme (McOS-MJV-Dark-Mode), which has the benifit of having GTK2-applications enjoy the same dark mode.

NEW:

For the McOS-XFCE-edition visit this link
In the download-section here you can download it too.
There are 2 versions available in the downloadable file here (Version I is for XFCE with Thunar-version below 1.8, II for version =>1.8)

NEW:

For the Linux Mint Cinnamon community here is a special version:

Visit McOS-Mint-Cinnamon-Edition for more info.
In this download-section you can choose McOS-Mint-Cinnamon-Edition.

Careful: do not use the Cinnamon-version in the standard gnome version!

NEW

How to install:

There is 5 files to choose:

- McOS-MJV (the Mac OS Mojave (TM) interpretation
- McOS-MJV-Dark-Mode is the dark-mode interpretation
- McOS HS (this file contains two files, one with-/ one without transparency)
- McOS-SPG is a theme inspired by Garageband (TM) and Logic PRO (TM)
- McOS-YS is a theme inspired by the OSX Yosemite (TM) theme by Apple (TM)
- McOS-Shell-Themes contains Three shell themes

Download the file; extract it; and (in some cases ) you will find two themes. a version with transparency, another with (not-transparent); copy both files to a '.themes'-folder you make in your home directory. Or to your USR/SHARE/THEMES-folder for system-wide use (certainly for theming of SNAP-packages)
Then use Tweak-tool to select the GTK and shell theme.
LOG OUT AND BACK IN for changes to take effect !
Next
OSX uses titlebuttons on the left-side:
To put the buttons to the left open a terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout "close,minimize,maximize:"
In Gnome 3.26 gnome-tweak has a option to change the position of the titlebuttons, so the above steps are not necessary.

Troubleshooting:

When, as such, theming does not look the way it should be: make sure you have installed the necessary theme-"engines":

- The gnome-themes-standard package,
- The murrine engine. This has different names depending on your distro.
gtk-engine-murrine (Arch Linux)
gtk2-engines-murrine (Debian, Ubuntu, elementary OS)
gtk-murrine-engine (Fedora)
gtk2-engine-murrine (openSUSE)
gtk-engines-murrine (Gentoo)

"sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf" is the terminal command, usually solves the issues with GTK2.

Hello! The themes are awesome. These are some bugs. 1) There's no pressed effect on the buttons in vlc-player below. I need to know when a record button is in active mode. 2) Progress bar from Transmission gets the same colour as an area around when I clicked on it. goo.gl/myTbZY

Hi Paul
I tried the theme with Cinnamon (Mint 19) and I noticed that the gray shades of the windows are not exactly the same with those of the applications. I use the Mint X theme of the system as a basis. Am I wrong in the settings? thanks for your help.

Hi Paul,
There are a few small changes that can make it even better. For example, in the default document viewer, in Ubuntu, the total page count number is barely visible since it is in black font and it is noticeable in few other applications too when the button is not active it is not visible because of contrast of black font in black background.

Hi Paul,

Your work and efforts for this theme McOS-MJV-Dark-Mode are really amazing. But there seems to be an important issue with this theme while using Firefox browser as all the fill-in fields like this one are blacked out so you cant see what are you are typing. In google search black color flashes while using this theme. The issues are only with firefox and not with chrome browser so it is quite irritating to keep changing from one browser to another for trivial tasks. Is there any way I can send you a screenshot highlighting this issue?

that is unfortunate. True, in firefox the google search black box flashes. But, if you care to try, so does every other dark theme. This is a firefox-thing I can not resolve. It is the way firefox translates the GTK (which differs from the way Chrome does). In fact the way it handles menu's (to small) is also an issue. The point is that Chrome handles theming in GTK much better than Firefox. It is shameful, really...

There is an option to override by going to about: config and add new string by right click.
widget.content.gtk-theme-override = Adwaita: light or any other light theme and restart firefox.
Now it looks much better and all flashing is gone in Firefox. Here is the link which I followed.

Hi Paulxfcce,

Its a really great theme and I love it. I would just like to let you know that the resize cursor handles around the windows such as terminal, firefox etc are goes beyond the window. I am not sure you are getting my point here or not :P wish I could upload the screenshot to describe point in detail. But the move cursor handle around the nautilus window is perfect.

Thanks and Regards.

Some applications do not follow the build in window-decoration properly, resulting in doubling the area of the resize-grip. This is especially an issue when using big shadows (as this theme does).

+ Excellent theme paul! Would you mind sharing a screenshot of your font settings? I can't quite get the clean look of the font shown in your screenshots.
