Best Release Yet!

Tested the simplicity of the installer using my friends kids. Ranging from 13 to 5 years old, they were given clearly written instructions on installing AL. 3 clicks for a basic install. They all installed AL, updated it and begin playing around with all the available apps. It was fun.

For a more advanced (and challenging) install, I install AL 07 into Frankenstein, my most horrible test machine. 2 IDE drive, 2 scsi, 1 sata, 1 firewire hd and a usb stick for home and the mess goes on.

No problems. AL 07 install smoothly and even reused the home dir from a yoper (another nice distro) install test on the usb stick.

Overall, AL 07 was able to see and setup more hardware than other distros I have tested, but like all other distros there are some it had problems with. Mostly pure windows dumbware, but with some effort they were made to work.

For problematic machines, live IRC support is there to help one along. From simple questions to install problems. Please keep in mind, of course, the people on the live support channel are volunteers and need to sleep everyone now and again.

The software repository needs some updating but that's in progress and should be done shortly.

Its more than worth a go, I expect that most will be very happy with it, if they do.

Hi I have a Dell XPS M170. I'm trying to install booting from the CD, but when it comes to Locating CD it waits for a long time stopping with the message that it cannot find the CD, but it is in. Any idea why

Is there anything "strange" about that hardware (e.g. SATA CD drive)?

Sadly there could be a few reasons.

The best one is that the cd disk is no good. Try burning a new one.

If you burned it on Windows (Windows often produces "coasters"), try rebooting and burning from a fresh session that hasn't used up all its RAM.

Another reason is your cdrom device is failing. Try letting it cool off for 15 mins before trying to boot from it.

Last reason I can think of is both of the above. Your burner is failing thus producing bad cds or partially written cds.

If your burner app has some kinds of verification of burn function, I suggest you use it.

If you need any further assistance please come to the IRC help channel irc.freenode.org, #arklinux.

Good Luck!

Njaaa, the burer is working :-) I've installed and burned several OS'es/CD's since. It is only Ark that is failing. FC5, OpenSuse, Xandros and Windows works fine it is just Ark that is failing. It works fine when I installed under vmware.

Does mission control really use the noia icons even if you're using, say crystal?

please say it isn't so

Unfortunately, yes. This needs corrected so it honors the KDE icon theme.

The installer continues to improve. Now making it possible to install Ark on machines with multiple hard drives. And, as always, stability and functionality continue to improve as well. Ark probably has the best none kde app integration of any Gnu Linux distro. While other distro as still struggling with things like OpenOffice.org integration, Ark has had this down for quite some time.

This grassroots distro is showing as much sophistication as most well established distro. Ark Linux is definitely a distro to watch.

I know my company is.

Windows like? I think not.
If compared, one would notice, Mission Control looks more like MAC's Preferences interface than windows. Additionally, one must remember, Windows has taken the majority of all it has, from other OSes. There is little originality in it.

And then there's another thing to remember, "Don't knock it until you've tried it!", good advice.

Somewhat resembling that other OS isn't a bad idea -- first of all it eases transition for former Windows users, second -- as much as I hate Microsoft in general and Windows in particular -- not everything about it is bad.

That's Ark Linux. You're seeing our installer in the first screen shot, and mission control in the second one. The reason it looks kinda Windows-like is the fact that we're aiming at the new Linux user that is transitioning from the Windows platform. There is nothing wrong with helping new users feel accustomed to Linux. :)

While Linux and MAC does look different, it brings the strengths of those OS's to the users.
If someone is leaving MS they are already unhappy, who not just give the best of Linux? I've given Linux to many people, and none spent that much time getting "up and running" because it looking so different. In fact they usually love the way it looks.
Trying to make a win look a like is like moving to Linux but not really, which in my view is a half baked approach. It might be that the designer likes the win look, which if that's the case then say so.
Even better would be to offer both.

I agree. It can resemble another OS and be fine. There is nothing wrong with that. Some people, I think...are literally scared of windows. They need to go on one of those talkshows about phobias..and run from an XP disk screaming.

Anyway, functionality, though...is very important. I haven't used this, so I can't say.

This has been fixed quite a while ago - it went unnoticed initially because most people just use "System Install".
