Well, removing ZMD is one of the first things I do. Using smart: I COULD. But one of the things I liked about SuSE WAS yast. One place where I could control everything. This was my main "sales" argument when telling people good things about a distro.
opensuse-updater updated some packages and then looked fore new updates and never got any further :-(
The IMAP problem is concistent on my server at work. I'm the only one having this problem. I have /home installed on my laptop and I never format it, so I know that after installing all settings are as they should.
I reinstalled opensuse 10.1 and IMAP worked as a charm. I suspect that there are some kind of IP kernel filtering or something like that gives me problems since both IMAP and MySQL consistently gave the problems :-(
I tried installing on my stationary at home which also runs opensuse 10.1, but I never got past probing harddisks, because then the installed crashed. I tried installing in the other modes, Tex, disable ACPI etc. but then the machine froze :-( so it is still running opensuse 10.1
And just to put things stragiht. I'm not bitching about suse, never would I mean I wrote the bug reports and a couple of hours after there are people on the case.
I'm just suggesting that they should not release so soon. I dont think there is a need for a new version ever 8 months. Release once per year or maybe every second year. Focus on a rocksolid, "bug free" version. 10.1 had SO many problems when released then the RM version came out in which I have found no errors. Use a MUCH longer test period. If not newcomers will get a really bad taste when trying out Linux. 3 people I know that I suggested using Linux downloaded 10.1 and did they switch back to Windows? Yes they did. I tryed telling them to try again when 10.1 ROM came out, and that was a struggle because they had the bad experiences from before.
Again... I'm not bitching, just trying to make a point. I still love opensuse, I will still support it, recomend it, but I just think that they should rething the release frequenzy and method.
Thanks for the comment. I would suggest not installing 10.2 until some time yet:-(

I also had problems with kmail and certain IMAP-servers: "error starting TLS". I installed the openssl package from SUSE10.1, and everything is working fine again.
Nevertheless, I would prefer more thoroughly tested realeases.

Mysql is working here fine, about package management:
smart
You can install/remove/update applications with it in a very easy way. Forget about yast.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about the menu, it takes 3 clicks to change it back to the original.

Well this new menu is ugly ( for me ) but is not the issue anyway , the real issue ( and maybe you guys didn't noticed ) is / are _the GNOME depends ( eg: like half gnome
, mono and friends etc ) this thing _NEED_
to run_. A default _KDE_ installation pulls HALF GNOME !?! ( because beagle ? and this kickoff menu ?). This is for sure
a big issue for users _want KDE_ and NOT GNOME...

I have to say : I use openSUSE and I will use openSUSE 10.2 also ! Ok the new startmenu , in the moment ( for me ) it looks a little bit ugly , only a little bit ! They have to work on it , especially at the design ! The design cheap ! Come on work on the design ! AND is it possible , for a user , to bring a new button in , between the Buttons :
"Favorite" , "History" , "Computer" , Applications" , "Leave" ? Can I change that buttons ?
Dont hate YAST , it is THE tool for all on your openSUSE . It take long time , OK , but when you know it what is the problem with it ?

We can see that openSUSE it is dishonourable! The new menù is terrifying, indeed orribile. it is how much more far away is from the concept of “usability”. And it is also ugly to see. You fan SuSE seriously considered to pass to Ubuntu. If you want SMART (that it is an ugly copy of apt-get) you will have how much better is on the market of the distributions: www.ubuntu.com | www.kubuntu.org

This is the best way to make everyone an ubuntu-hater! This hype , sux 'cause (K)ubuntu has as many errors as SuSe has just in other places!

I'm a Debian and Kubuntu user, and yes, DEB packages are the best in the world.

The KickOff menu is a great idea in terms of usability.

And you are just a big TROLL.

pls use smart as default software management tool

Report

smart is included in the distribution and can be used as well as YaST packagemanagement. smart doesn't do deltarpms though, so online update is slower. You also have the choice to use rug or zypper on the command line.

Note that we now have an 'openSUSE package management' option at install time that removes ZMD etc, making package management as fast as on 10.0 and before.

well at least in 10.1 yast is 10 times slower than smart.

well, i haven't tried it, but i read yast in 10.2 got seriously faster... and smart doesn't support delta-rpm's and other features, so i still think yast is the way to go.

They did find a few bugs that slowed down the software installation tool of suse.
So it should be faster then before.

Having that said, if someone wants to use smart in stead, he/she is free to do so.
No reason to make smart default in openSUSE

1. DNS name resolution still does not work with .local domains.
2. RPM and yast suck completely compared to DEB and tools like apt-get or aptitude. Pretty unconvenient.
3. KDE shipped with Suse comes with pretty ugly default fonts. Is this a freetype problem?

Report

It's not a freetype problem; all is about patents! Have a look at this:http://en.opensuse.org/Optimal_Use_of_MS_TrueType_Core_Fonts_for_a_KDE_Desktop_on_SuSE

and this:

http://en.opensuse.org/TrueType

I hope It'll be helpfull.

Hi ,
openSUSE is also my favorite distro, perfect for my desktop . Ok , after the installation you have some work to do . You need too add the server from Packman and Guru , and install the missing files like lame , w32... , Mplayer ...
But openSUSE have a big community , easy to use Yast for everything .
But I hope that the new kickoff menu will be able to do : animation when starting , style/color change ...
My favorite is Polyester .
I am waiting for the new openSUSE 10.2
