Moments' Tracker

VLC Extensions

Score 59%
Description:

Moments' Tracker allows you to track all your favorite movie/media moments and scenes.
Bookmark your favorite moment, give it a title/caption, and that's it.

Once you've done this, you can jump directly to your moment anytime you open that media file, no need to scroll through trying to find certain moment.

If you just want to mark your position so that you could resume from where you stopped, you could use the "Checkpoint" feature.

Click the "Checkpoint!" button, and retrieve it whenever you want using "Retrieve Checkpoint" button.

Whenever you open a media file, all your bookmarked moments are displayed so that you can manipulate it.

To install Moments' Tracker, download moments_tracker_V1.lua file, and add it into the following destination:

In Windows:
Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions\

In Mac OS X: /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/extensions/

In Linux:
/usr/share/vlc/lua/extensions/

Yay, it works!!! For whatever reason, VLC's native "Qt interface" → "Continue playback?" feature does not work for me, whether I set it to "Always" or "Ask". I have seen it work in the past (probably on 2.2.3?), but on 2.2.8 and 3.0.2, it doesn't function (Windows 64-bit platform). I know I'm not alone in experiencing this; not sure why such a relatively simple feature is so problematic.

In any case, I looked at the 6 different plugins that came up for a keyword search of "resume" (only one of those came up when searching for "continue", so the author of Moments' Tracker may want to include that word somewhere in the description). What I found:

Multiple VLC enhancments [sic] / Omni — No way to change options (e.g. the dangerous "hit Del to delete currently playing file without warning") without donating. No thanks.

Progress (Saves Your Progress) — Restore of the last playlist works, but the last file starts playing again from the beginning.

Quick Save/Load Playlist — Didn't try this one, but the description only mentions resuming where you were in the playlist, not where you were in the last file.

Resume Media — Wow, one of the very worst UIs I have ever seen. Once I finally figured out how the heck to use it, I was able to get manual saving and restoring of play location to work under 2.2.8, but not the advertised automatic saving. Under 3.0.2, I couldn't get even manual save/restore to work.

vlcTADED — Didn't try it since it requires you to redo your directory structures to suit the plugin.

I tried Moments' Tracker (BTW, that apostrophe is not really correct English) last, and THANKFULLY, it was the one solution that worked. Unfortunately you have to remember to manually save your last play location, but I'm not sure if there's a way around that with the current LUA APIs. Also, there's some awkwardness where the plugin only works as expected if you quit VLC before opening a file that you want to resume a previous play location in, then activate the plugin after loading your media. However, you can work around this by going to "View" → "Bookmark your moments" (BTW, this really ought to have the same name as the plugin) → "Deactivate", and then reactivate it. This awkwardness is greatly reduced if you turn off VLC's default "Playlist" → "Use only one instance when started from file manager" option.

Anyway, thank you so much to the author(s) of Moments' Tracker for being the only ones to properly fix this curiously problematic necessity!

The good: Easy to use. Useful "Checkpoint" optional feature for quick bookmark/moment. Works with VLC 2.2.6 Umbrella. The bad: The extension can not be install per user. It can only be install for all users. So for Linux you must install the extension at "/usr/share/vlc/lua/extensions/". Otherwise it would not work at "~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/". Using: Moments' Tracker from 2016-09-13 "168031-moments_tracker_V1.lua". Debian 8 Jessie64-bit. GNOME 3.14.1. This is a suggestion, how about an additional "Remember Last" toggle button? When the user click on this "Remember Last" toggle button, a checkpoint would automatically be created when the user click on either VLC "Stop" playback button or close VLC. In other words, "Moments' Tracker" would remember the last position for all video files played, automatically resuming playback where you finished last time for all medias. Easy :)

Hi, Please share a getting started tutorial. In latest version of VLC, even after using multiple times I am not able to clearly understand how to use it. Should I pause the vlc or keep it playing when I say capture the moment? And which comes first? clicking on confirm or capture the moment? The UI is not at all clear in this aspect which I should do when. Why cant it simply capture if VLC is in pause or running, the moment I click capture? Isnt that the whole purpose should be? Also confirm does not seem to be working at all. Nothing happens after I enter the moment name and confirm. Please issue a detailed guide as its a very useful tool, let down by poor UI.

Excellent! Five stars!
For people who want to backup their moments data (on my windows 10 machine anyway), the moments data is stored in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\vlc\moments_tracker.txt

Hi, nice plugin. Where are the "Moments" stored on the drive? (So that I can do backup/sync). Are there any limits to the posterity of Moments? I.e. what should I do to make sure they are kept and doesn't go away?

Glad it helped.
Unfortunately, any plugin or add-on for VLC can't work automatically or using a separate specified button, you have to turn it on every time you use VLC, by going to "View" menu, and clicking "Moments' Tracker".

Glad you liked it, also these screen shots would be helpful, though, you should know that the interface provided by VLC's UI is really terrible.

the same, on Win 8.1 x64

I wanted to use VLSub, and Click to Play/Pause too, but they don't work on 2.1.x, likewise. However, there are notes about the incompatibility on plugins' pages, and I found a similarity and finally the reason. Am I wrong?

Is there anything in the logs if you try to activate the extension?

Lua cannot handle UTF-8 strings properly and so it cannot create/write files with paths containing other than Basic Latin characters (Non-ASCII). Try to customize the destination path:
Line 3 >Quote: destination = "d:/VLC-moments_tracker.txt"Line 47 >Quote: if destination == nil then destination = vlc.config.userdatadir().."/moments_tracker.txt" end
