New Update 9/2/2017

This is a gnome-desktop-interpretation of Mac OSX. I've tried to implement the feel of OSX on the gnome-applications. In version 3.0 I've modernized it in every little detail. There is nothing (not a single item) that is not new. Resulting in a completely rewritten GTK.CSS-file four times bigger than the previous one, while the theme feels more responsive. I've also added a dark theme, so Terminal, Photo's, and Video's are automatically dark-themed.

I've spend a great deal of time (3 months) and effort on this theme into fine-tuning it, so I hope you try before you judge !

Main features:

- Support for dark theme.
- Use of gradients and shadows to improve readability.
- Same theming across GTK2 and GTK3. (See screenshots)

Separate download for Shell-themes:

- Shell theme with white dock and slighty dark top-bar
- Shell theme with dark dock and dark top-bar

The 'Extra'-file contains the Droid Sans -font and some backgrounds.

This theme is developed on gnome 3.20 and updated to 3.24
This only works on a gnome-desktop, no support for other desktop-environments.

When, as such, theming does not look the way it should be: make sure you have installed the necessary theme-"engines":

- The gnome-themes-standard package,
- The murrine engine. This has different names depending on your distro.
gtk-engine-murrine (Arch Linux)
gtk2-engines-murrine (Debian, Ubuntu, elementary OS)
gtk-murrine-engine (Fedora)
gtk2-engine-murrine (openSUSE)
gtk-engines-murrine (Gentoo)

How to install:

First: Just copy the extracted file to a '.themes'-folder you make in your home directory.
Then use Tweak-tool to select the GTK and shell theme.
LOG OUT AND BACK IN for changes to take effect !

Second: This theme was set out to use Droid Sans Regular (11pt,scaling factor:1,00) as the interface-font. (You can find the font in the 'Extra'-file in the download-section. Using other fonts (or bigger) might result in strangly formed buttons.

Third: OSX uses titlebuttons on the left-side:
To put the buttons to the left open a terminal:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout "close,minimize,maximize:"

To put the buttons back to the right in case you want to revert:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout ":minimize,maximize,close"

The original version 2.6 remains available.

Your theme is absolutely fabulous. perfect with gnome 3.24. On gnome 3.26 (Ubuntu 17.10) a little problem with the icons close to the running applications button in the gnome shell panel. Tried to correct this but no clue how to tweak the gnome-shell.css

The layout is broken because I still use gnome 3.18 and it is not supported?

Report

yes, updated to gnome 3.20 and the layout is ok. Only one problem on ubuntu 16.04 gnome 3.20 - the buttons of the Files window only are not correctly aligned to the left - there is some extra space. On the HSierra there is no such a space but I prefer global dark theme which you have but there is missing. Great theme, indeed!

I found the problem, it is in gtk-dark.css, don't know why you put this large padding but on the line 6111

nautilus-window.maximized headerbar, .nautilus-window headerbar {
/* padding-left: 88px;*/} .

I've comment it and everything looks ok .

can you reduce the drop shadow? the performance of e. g. chrome is very slow. nautilus is good. why?

Report

I will reduce the shadows on the window in the next release. The problem? The way gnome handles the window of non-pure-gnome app's. The way the shadows are drawn is different (btw, gnome makes its own titlebar on non-headerbar-app's). Also, the 'drag'-area (the area that is available for the pointer that enables you to change the window-size) is also different. So in this theme there is a carefull trade-off between these different approaches, but still trying to add more shadow. Anyway, in the next release I will reduce the drop-shadow. Hopefully, it would deal with you issue.

1 suggestion:

a option maybe, when the windows is maximized the corners stays round. (like on the original theme of gnome)

Great theme! I have three suggestions:

- Make the context menu borders rounded
- Offer a variation without the fake blur texture on context menus
- Reduce titlebar gradient intensity so it looks more like macOS

Report

rounded context menu border? tried it, but -for some reason- the rounded corners of context-menus tend to work only inside ( and I mean literally inside the window) the application. Once the menu goes outside the window the rounded corners are gone. Thing is, I use linear-gradient images for the background of the menu's, not just a color. I'm still trying to figure out what I can do.

Hi. F26, gnome 3.24.3. Contrary to your other fine theme I'm currently using, HSierra-S, spacing between items in right button menus is at least awkward, no matter what font I have used, Cantarell or Droid-Sans.
Observed in nautilus, gnome-terminal, gedit firefox etc.

Menus diff. Above HSierra-S-1.2.1S, below OSX-III-1.0

Report

paulxfce

There is a row of buttons above the menu-items. Which I do not have in this version (3.24.2). It is a firefox- related right-context menu, I see now. The same happens when you show the menubar in firefox. The items are without spacing... The problem is that right-context-menu's are at the mercy of the application under which you use it. They tend to look different in other applications as well. I see what I can do about it...

The exact same look is present in nautilus, gedit, terminal as stated above.
If it helps, previous version i.e. osx-ii-26 does not show this behaviour.

Report

right-space menu have a top and bottom space, to make the selected (blue) background stand out more. But spacing between the items has not been altered ( there is a line between groups of items ), at least in gnome 3.24.2.

Report

context -menu's in standard gnome-apps have a top and bottom space, to make the selected (blue) bar stand out more. Spacing between items should be fine (nothing is changed); item-groups have a line between them now. This is not the case in HSierra-S. That may explain the difference I've tested it in gnome 3.24.2 and it looks as intended.

I found a solution. Problem is, that it effects every menu. By increasing the padding of menu-item with 3 px, you get a reasonable spacing in firefox-menu's, but this also increases the padding in every dropdown-menu... Just what I want to avoid. Anyway, in the next release there will be a fix included. Thanks for pointing this out !

New version

Added a github-link 4 months ago

Files are now available at my github

Update to gnome 3.24 4 months ago

Updated the theme to work with the latest gnome.
Headerbar and buttons are a bit smaller.
Redesigned the window-decoration and shadows to address issues
Removed redundant code.

Solution for nautilus-menu-disabled-items -theming. New sidebar background 6 months ago

Solution for nautilus-menu-disabled-items -theming. New sidebar background
Thanks Gelonek for finding the bug. I appreciate the feedback!

Added a theme-version with no transparent sidebar (NT) 6 months ago

At request: a version with no transparency set for the nautilus sidebar.

Window resize area reduced 6 months ago

'Melk' pointed out to the problem of the large area the resizing cursor takes before the pointer focusses on the other items on the desktop. He is absolutely right. The margin was set to 10px. Which is wrong. I now reduced the margin-size to 3px. I re-uploaded a correct version (an update again...) 2.4.

System-log errors corrected 6 months ago

Autocrosser1 pointed out that the theme created 'log-flooding', which pointed to colors not defined properly. Updated the download-file with a corrected version 2.3

Refining theme 6 months ago

-fixed the round button on sliders not showing a border
-made new check-and radio buttons
-harmonized the size and spacing of check-and radio buttons across GTK2- and GTK- applications
-removed the dotted inner box that showed the focus-button, because it was ugly...
- harmonized the line-color and depth beneath the headerbar or menubar across GTK2 and GTK3
-Blurred background remains even in maximized window-state
-removed the dotted line that appears at the top or bottom when scrolling trough lenghty lists (overshoot and undershoot)
reduced the default button-height to 20px, thereby making the buttons smaller in GTK3

Side-bar 6 months ago

New Side-bar solution: using blurred background, instead of transparent color

Version 2 6 months ago

Major changes in this theme:
- lighter theme, with rounded buttons
- transparent sidebar with bolded text-elements (just like mac-osx-finder)
- elevated and rounded buttons
- exclusion of original unfocused window theming: only title-buttons are greyed out
- overall fine-tuning
