The kernel handles all the device drivers, system calls, interaction between the human and the hardware, etc. In short, the kernel operates the system.
The kernel is the OS. Everything else is just applications ;)
Yeah, it would be wrong to call a linux distribution "Linux", but all that KDE/X11/GNU/Linux crap gets on my nerves too. I just say I use Slackware and let people figure it out for themselves :) - Jul 08 2003
