Woow... This may be a tad on the late side considering when this was released. But yes, i agree. Until i eventually get around to making a mousecursor theme, and that may well be quite a while off yet, this is the one i'm endorsing :) (the same way i endorse the web window decoration, meaning that it's what i'll be using myself ;) ) - Aug 28 2005

I second this entirely. The person blowing their brains out is not something i enjoy, but the concept of the icons is amazing. There is truly a set that needs doing here. It'll take a lot of work, but it will be greatly rewarding in the end. An entire desktop themed in this manner would be something to show off ;) - Aug 19 2005

When it comes to screen realestate, amaroK has what is quite possibly the smallest footprint of all players out there. A fully working interface to most of the application's core functionality in 22 by 22 pixels. Yes, this is of course the systray icon. Scroll wheel and such is truly your friend here, it's usable for switching tracks ([ctrl][wheel]), scrolling through a track ([shift][wheel]), volume change ([wheel]), viewing track information (hover), show/hide application ([mouse1]), actions menu ([mouse2]).

So... yeah :) These screenshots were made to show off all the functionality, but this particular part of it does not do well for showing this particular stroke of genious (i can't even remember who came up with this functionality... but a brilliant idea it certainly was ;) ) - Aug 16 2005
I believe I know what he means. And someone actually came onto the channel sometime last week and suggested something like this. What he means is not a mouse-keyboard combo but a pure keyboard shortcut, like what we have for playing (simply pressing [enter]). Possibly [ctrl][shift][enter] would be the moost sane shortcut assignment, since [ctrl] is used for the mouse/keyboard combo, and shift would then signify secondary action as opposed to primary (since it's [ctrl][right click] and not [ctrl][click]).

I'm really writing this down here so that I don't forget it later when I get back onto the channel, but that's my thoughts so far (after thinking about it for a while). :) - Nov 27 2004

...that you use system colours in stead of hardcoded ones? :) It would make this style much more interesting, in that it will follow the desktop's colour scheme, and thus not be as you say a drab black and white, but in stead make it stylish and make it fit right in with a lot of people's desktops.

Thanks :)

I've looked into this, and I thought I remembered a problem... If you look in your $kdeprefix/share/apps/kppp/pics/ folder, you will see those dock icons. Problem is that while these are just normal size icons at 22x22 pixels, they have been placed in the pics folder and are thus impossible to theme. Feel free to log in a bug on kppp for this, and do suggest some more sane names for the icons while you're there :) - Jun 24 2005
Sorry for the long reply time, and I'm afraid I didn't check here before releasing the new one, otherwise I'd have had all three. KPPP should be covered, Xine doesn't have an icon per se (I do not have an icon for xine-ui, I presume you meant that one), and MainActor I've also not got an icon for. TODO listed ;) - Apr 09 2005
Thanks, much appreciated! :) - Jan 13 2005
Hehe, a good point, actually :) I shall have to see about making a Reinhardt style emoticon set :) - Jan 13 2005
All to his own.

This was never supposed to be teletubbie land. The application icons have colours, many mimetype icons have colours too, however the icons you see most of, namely the actions icons (toolbar buttons and such), do not. This is deliberate, and will not change. - Jan 13 2005
Aah, I'm sorry for the wait. You need to rename the index.desktop file to for example index-svg.desktop and use the included png version in stead (rename that to index.desktop). Otherwise it will go on using the SVG version first. - Jan 13 2005
Hehe, actually yes, now that you say it ;) I do not use Eclipse myself, so I never noticed it. I will try and do something about that for the next version.

As for the bug you report above, that is a new one... However, if this is caused by an icon set, you should probably get a hole of the kdesktop maintainers in stead and talk to them about it, I don't see how simple images can cause that sort of thing. - Dec 18 2004
Hehe, thanks ;)

You put that icon in, I presume, the apps secion (you should be able to find it in $KDEDIR/share/icons/crystal/22x22/apps or /actions). Do send it to me when you're satisfied that the icon works well enough :) - Dec 18 2004

Sorry for the reply to myself here ;) I forgot to link to dannya's post on kde-artists.org, it's the one above here :) - Jun 24 2005
I absolutely agree with the sentiments in this post, both on your work and on the idea of having the background fade in and out, it would give us a whole new dimension of eyecandy, only a step from dannya's vision of the animated splash.

On top of this, I would love to see an option in here to use the user's desktop background as background here, on top of the fading... You have it fade to your background upon login, then the icons start appearing, then once the KDE is up and running message is shown, it fades to a view of the fully loaded desktop :)

Much prettiness, plus with using the user's background, it fits in even better with the desktop. What I mean here is, you already started this by using the user's current icon set for an icon source, so using the current wallpaper and desktop text colour would make it simply fit in :) It should be muchly pretty ;) - Jun 24 2005

Thing is, you say you know 43 KDE users who don't like Kopete... Why don't people tell the Kopete developers what's wrong? I'm sorry to be the one to say this, but why not help out the Kopete people in stead? They've already got a multi-network IM client for KDE, which blends in perfectly... They're even looking for people right now! Go join #kopete on irc.freenode.net or get directly in contact with them. What you may remember seeing is http://www.elfquest.com/ which is the homepage of WARP Graphics, acclaimed author of the fantasy series ElfQuest, which first appeared in print in 1979. They have a big problem (at least have had in the past) with people who use the WARP Graphics logo as their own. While they have a very liberal policy regarding copyright, their logo is holy ground, in that it's what they are identified by.

In short, this and the WARP Graphics logo http://www.elfquest.com/images/About.gif do seem very similar. But, as mentioned before, the two products (amaroK and ElfQuest) are so different that it has little or no meaning ;)

Also: Very nice work! If this one is chosen over my personal favourite (amaroK: Wolf Howl) then I shall be only very little disappointed ;) - Dec 14 2004

And not just because of my obsession with wolves ;) While this particular version of your wolf howl icon might not scale too well (maybe too much detail?) it is certainly distinct and even beautiful. The wolf's howl is quite possibly one of the most distinct sounds in the animal kingdom, and certainly known by everyone (for better or worse). This one has my vote :)

First, I am not in any way an official voice for the amaroK team, I just hang out with them and help out when I can ;) Please people, comment on this one. And PLEASE describe why you vote bad. Voting bad without bothering to describe why doesn't exactly do anyone any good.

1. combine the start/pause buttons - the icon on the start button to change to the pause button.

Quite possibly the single most requested feature apart from cover saving (which we're unable to provide legally)

2. anlarge the start/pause buttob - it's the most commonly used feature, so according to fitt's (pitts? ) law it should be the largest button.

Fitts' law, actually :) It would be a Good Thing for purely usability related issues, but it is unfortunately not quite so good here, simply because what we've got to work with is a toolbar button. However, it might be possible to add text to the button (so that it reads either play or pause, depending on what icon is shown).

3. add a "record" button - i.e. a streamripper shortcut..

That is not exactly legal... This would be the prime candidate for a plugin, but that's discussed bellow.

4. not shown: a streaming media station chooser (similar to iTunes (tm) ) - before the amarok site went down, i've posted a message about it in amarok's forum, and was given a reply that it's illegal to use reuse shoutcast's directory.
therefore - why not use xiph.org
http://dir.xiph.org/
or
google stations?
http://directory.google.com/Top/Arts/Music/Sound_Files/MP3/Streaming/Stations/

The xiph dir does indeed seem like a pleasant option, but the problem is now, how do they manage the streams on there? It seems however that they only list specific streams that are made using icecast. Maybe a stream browser could be based on plugable backends? Need the devs on that one ;)

(and maybe enable a 3rd party plugin..)

A scripting based plugin system is under consideration, however the problem is that so far the scripting languages that are avaliable in KDE are somewhat lacking, in one way or the other.
Until that gets sorted out, resort to DCOP for all your scripting purposes; amaroK has a very large amount of DCOP function available, for adding media and play control and such. - Nov 20 2004
