Kopete Visual

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by gr3gg 60 comments

I should expect it would become just as themable as any other KDE program, which would mean that you can use any style on any program by appending --style stylename to the command you use to launch the program with. Give it a try with Kopete, try something like Comix , I suspect it would suit it quite well :) - Nov 11 2004

I've got a slight suggestion for you, you may or may not like it of course, but here goes :)

A (granted short) talk on #kopete with lillache (who is doing a rewrite of the chatwindow to make interface changes like this much easier) led to the conclusion that, while the ideas you present here are brilliant, some parts seem, for want of a better way of putting it, un-KDEish. More specifically, we were talking about your use of the QCategoryWidget as opposed to how it is normally done in KDE (see Konqueror, Kate, amaroK and many other programs). Using that type of sidebar would immediately remove two problems of the sidebar you have now:

- The already mentioned lack of KDEness
- The size problem mentioned in an earlier post

The size problem is fixed by the fact that the sidebars, when folded away, take up only the space occupied by the buttons, whereas the category widget always has at least one category shown, and thus take up all the space no matter what.

Just a suggestion, with accompanying reasoning for making it :) - Nov 10 2004

I like the clean of that suggestion, but I'm not sure if completely removing the lines is a good idea (since they separate information that does not nessecarily have anything to do with eachother). Maybe simply having the right side drawn (or in RTL environs the left one) would work? - Oct 14 2004
Amarok

Audioplayers by amarok 574 comments

Your engine must support ogg, and I suspect that you would be using gstreamer, since that engine needs a plugin to be able to play them and some don't have that plugin for some reason. If you compiled gstreamer from source, you need to re-compile gst-plugins, after installing the vorbis and ogg header files. If you installed it using (random package system), chances are that the plugins are greatly separated, and gst doesn't actually require the ogg plugin to work, so just install gstreamer-ogg or gstreamer-plugin-ogg or somesuch, and you should be ready to go.

Good luck, and happy amaroKking :D - Oct 11 2004

This is really quite scary... I'm not a big fan of the teletubbie land interface of Windows XP, but I know that they spent a whole lot of money on making it Just Right, so I guess they thought about it a lot ;) Anyway, what scares me is that it does indeed seem like the real thing, at least at first, and even second inspection. To make this work, I'm thinking that it would need to be non-click. That is, to change the shown section, one should not have to click on the header for that section, but simply hover over it, like you would a submenu. Otherwise it would be extra clicks, and then become a hindrance rather than a help... Just IMO :) - Sep 19 2004

And you seem to have indeed thought a lot about it :) Though it's not nessecary to start a whole new site for this, you could simply start a new section on http://wiki.kde.org where much discussion could happen in a relatively ordered fashion :) It is a very good idea, and I would love for it to be implemented. I of course don't know if you are aware, but GNOME has something like this, called Dashboard. Now, I am not saying we should just copy that, but it is a proof of concept in a way that we should not disregard that it is a thought through bit of programming, and thus we could learn from their mistakes, so we don't have to make them :) - Aug 20 2004

You might want to delete the autom4te.cache, it makes the archive somewhat on the large side, and it's only relevant to your machine :)

Also, I'm wondering how do I actually go about using this? It's not an application, I know, but it also doesn't show up in the Add new submenu in the Konqueror sidebar config menu... I really look forward to using this, but I just can't seem to figure it out ;) I looked at your .desktop file, and it has a Type=Link clause, is that right? - Aug 19 2004

Sorry, I've no idea why it happens or how to fix it, but I would just say that I've got the exact same problem, with the same system setup as described above (though my kdedir is /opt/kde and not /opt/username/kde-3.3beta2/) - Aug 10 2004
AKDC Beta3 preview 2(see changelog)

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by jrch2k 357 comments

We've already got another pixmap engine for kwin themes called IceWM :) But this seems to be going in a slightly different direction :) A programmed engine (i.e. no pixmaps) is potentially a lot faster, since it doesn't have to load pixmaps and such, and less memory heavy, since it doesn't have to cache the pixmaps it didn't load in the first place. Of course, the pixmap themes have their place (they often have a lot more eyecandy going on, as is clearly visible on the NVidia deco here :) ).

So, there we go :) That's why it should not go into KWin directly ;) - Aug 05 2004

Also, it breaks the KDE UI guidelines, which clearly states that a dialog must be able to show on a 640x480 screen when run outside of the KDE environment, and on an 800x600 screen when used inside KDE.

Otherwise, this looks good :) Keep it up! - Aug 05 2004

KDE 3.3 Konquered Earth Splash-screen

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by arcisz 15 comments

Actually, it seems you were right at first... The original font does seem to be rather futuristic. Go ahead with the old one, I stand corrected :) As mentioned by someone bellow, the other does seem to fit the feel of this splash better :) You still got my vote ;) - Jul 27 2004

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by arcisz 15 comments

This is great! One thing bugs me, however. The font where it says KDE 3.3 looks... well, a little too fancy, really. Too futuristic. A simple sans-serif font would do very well to bring it down to the pleasant not-in-your-face level of the rest of KDE. Other than that, this has got my vote :) - Jul 27 2004
KDE Media Center (idea)

Desktop Concepts by djworld 22 comments

Absolutely, though of course it would not be possible to include Apollon in the main KDE distribution (this has been discussed at length), it would as in the case of aKregator be possible to simply add another item in the sidebar...

As mentioned before, the applications would all run separately as well as inside the media centre, just as is the case with Kontact now. The idea is great, and I don't understand those who say the usability doesn't make sense here. What would make more sense than having all your media managed in the same place?

I would, however, suggest GwenView is replaced by Digikam in the pictures section, as Digikam is more of a management tool (plus with the camera integration, that is of course good), where GwenView is rather more a poweruser tool.

I am ranting here, so I shall stop now ;) Anyway, great idea, would love to see it happen :D - Jul 19 2004
Sidebar improvement

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by ra1n 26 comments

Right bloody on ya! If people could simply get past their "Hey this is teh sux0rz" and look at what's in front of them with an open mind, we'd quick get a good discussion going, in stead of random flaming.

Now to my suggestions: I like the idea you have to have the settings button in the top right corner. This way it's not in your face, but still visible enough to not be obscurely hidden. In the menu that comes up when the settings button is clicked, a simple checkable menu item saying something similar to "Show sidebar tabs" alongside the existing options already in the menu we already have should be visible, and this view simply another tab there, if that is not already the case (I have to admit I've not tested it out yet ;) ).

I would love for this to be implemented completely, it is a great addition to Konqueror's sometimes ever so slightly lacking usability. - Jul 16 2004

It could be a search kio that could be very capable, if it had a pluggable backend system... So that it would output the results in folders, one for each backend... This just hit me. Done this way, the frontend using the search kio could present the data in a good way to the user... - Jul 14 2004

Indeed it does, I'd not noticed that before now :) But that is one of the better things about Windows XP, have to say...

It provides extremely high level of information in relatively little space. It gives a good size preview of the file (for previewable files), and as much, if not more (visible) information as the detailed view.

Also, to mabs, I do like your choice in widget style and icon set ;) - Jul 14 2004

Right, I've no idea why this happens, the code causing the crash was 'stolen' wholesale from the kde libraries, and they seem just fine... Ooh, yes if you are trying to use the SVG as a wallpaper, then yes, that won't work. You need to use the PNG. If you want another size than the 1024x768 (I should say that it works fine scaled), load it in InkScape, Sodipodi or any other such program that handles SVG and export it to PNG. - Jul 02 2004

The tabs are that colour because someone pointed out that in stead of looking as if they are behind, they look like they are disabled.

The combo-boxes are grey because that is the button colour. What you see as combo boxes is drop-down lists, that is buttons that pop up lists, whereas a combo box is a text field with a drop-down list. In code they are more or less the same thing, however to the user they are not.

But I will try to take this into consideration when making the configuration dialog. For now, you will have to change them in the code. - Jun 21 2004
Home KIOSlave (idea)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by djworld 25 comments

Now, ignoring all the fud about "This is not teh hax, it looks like that os that I haet!" here's a couple of suggestions:

As pointed out above, the home name does seem like something we already have, and thus might confuse which we obviously don't want. Apart from all the fud, Start does seem like the best suggestion, and I would say that changing it to for example Begin Here seems like such a desperate attempt to just make it not Start. And, please remember, this is not a Start menu, this is a start point for browsing the computer, which is really something I've missed.

To make it output something that is usable, it would probably have to output HTML, but it is I am afraid, not really possible to make this flexible enough simply by using a HTML page, because of the potential for dynamic content in this starting point. Removable disks, network drives, mounted ISO images ( ;) ), you name it.

Just a couple of ideas :) - Jun 13 2004

HDE

Various Stuff by haydar 9 comments

Uhm... When was the last time you looked at the site title? The web-site is called KDE-Look.org and thus, the site IS K centric, as you put it. Everything here must in some way be related to KDE, which as Yaba points out in the above post is true for the posted GTK themes, IceWM themes and even the X Cursor themes. HDE is a competitor to KDE. You don't see GNOME being posted here, do you? Thus, HDE does not belong on KDE-Look.org. - Jun 09 2004

You do that either by posting your project a year or so ago (the size limit was changed), or by hosting your project elsewhere and then linking to it (that's what I do with my Reinhardt Icon set). The amount of traffic this site generates, I'm not at all surprised they decided on a 500k limit.

This has nothing to do with patents. It is international copyright law, and is what so far has protected open-source projects, with the licenses basically being legal documents describing exactly what is allowed by the author.

Please, have a look at the copyright laws, they are in fact very interesting. It's also interesting to consider the fact that they are changed close to every year, because someone finds a way through holes in the law, enabling them to perform illegal actions.

For example, a hole was just plugged in Denmark that allowed people to copy music from CDs borrowed at the library legally.

Well, there are random weird glitches, but basically, just set up your set to use the svgs and try it :) Have a look at my index.desktop.svg (or index.desktop in the svg only archive) to see what I did :)

Other than that, watch out for scientific notation in the SVG files (Sodipodi and InkScape both 'suffer' from this), as KSVG in 3.2.1 and before (3.2.2 has this fixed) barfs on those and refuses to render the icons (earlier versions of the Reinhardt image icons specifically had this problem). Scientific notation is where numbers are written as for example 0.9882432e-17 or somesuch (which translates into basically 0). - May 31 2004
