I can't seem to download the file to test this version.

Could you please be specific about whether you've changed the values or whether the theme has a problem "out of the box"?

The Murrine engine has had quite a few changes over the last year and I'm not actually sure if this theme works particularly well any more.

I have re-written it so that it works on most recent versions, and I hope to polish it a bit more and publish it soon.

In the mean time, answer my first question and we can go from there. - Mar 13 2011
The download is fixed!

Thank you guys for expressing interest in this theme and sorry for taking so long. - Jul 17 2010
It's a feature of the newer murrine engine.

Try "comboboxstyle = 1" inside the engine block in the default definition. - Jul 17 2010

Great work!

Sorry I haven't been replying to your mails. I've been busy and didn't have internet access.

BTW, if I recall your code correctly, you misspell "default", but you do so consistently, so no problem :)

I haven't used BeOS/Haiku to be able to tell whether Zevenos's themes are more or less accurate, but by and large I prefer this Haiku theme to theirs. - Nov 27 2009
This update couldn't have come at a better time. I found the time to upgrade to Ubuntu Karmic today and was looking to replace my theme which was made on a fluxbox configuration and had many bugs in vanilla GNOME.

So . . . thank you and congratulations on a very well done theme! This is a huge improvement over 0.1.1 and a damn near perfect theme overall. The metacity is very nice also.

I'm currently using this theme along with Gnome Do's Docky plugin, which makes my desktop this wonderful mix of retro and flash.

Again, thank you :) - Oct 31 2009
I just noticed you uploaded this. I'll have a quick look now, but then I must sleep. Also, have a look at my comment in your OS2 theme.

That's great! I'm looking forward to it. If you want a bugtester or someone to through ideas around with, let me know. (I'm busy; but for a good Haiku theme, I'll find the time ;)

A quick note on this theme: it appears to suffer from a common problem when, for example, the combo box in the nautilus toolbar is highlighted.

I can help you with a specific solution in the next few days if you're interested, but I don't have the time to go through the gtkrc right now. In the meantime, you can have a look at the workarounds at the bottom of any good gtkrc, such as the default ubuntu ones, or Shiki, and so on.

New Wave is /very/ well made pixmap theme, but seems very complicated, to be, anyway. - Jun 14 2009
I love retro themes and this looks absolutely great.

I don't suppose I could cajole you into making a BeOS/Haiku theme?

They still have the squared plastic look of OS2 and classic Windows, but I think they look more subtle and elegant. - Jun 14 2009

Considering some of the blatant IP violations on this website, this barely registers as such.

However, modifying something you have not been given permission to modify and publishing it as your own work is illegal in Germany where this server is hosted.

There are more nuances to copyright law than this, such as fair use, which do not apply in this case. (This is not a review, the size/quality of the artwork is not considerably degraded, etc.)

So, despite their somewhat offensive tone, the above posters are in the right and you are in the wrong here. - Jun 14 2009

You can make the toolbar buttons smaller by commenting line 6. More compactness can be achieved by adding "GtkWidget::focus-padding = 0" in line 52 or thereabouts (it doesn't really matter as long as you're within the "theme-default" block).

Anything more substantial than this will considerably decrease the aesthetic appeal of the theme. But if you're feeling particularly brave you can remove all the "= theme-wide" and "= theme-wider", which will decrease widget padding.

There are a few more tricks, but I haven't experimented a lot with compactness to be able to help further.

Hope this helps. - Apr 12 2009

You'd start by editing the metacity-theme-1.xml to your liking :)

While removing the gradient behind the buttons is fairly trivial, you'd then have to recolour the buttons because otherwise they would be too light to see. This recolouring, if I understand correctly, would be done in the xml not in the png files.

I'm not aware of any metacity theme tutorials. Your best bet is to jump in and hack. Or to use another theme. Consider also that emerald themes are much easier to make, though they do not pick up on the colours of the GTK+ theme, because there's a GUI available. - Apr 13 2009
Yes, there is a way, but it's harder than it looks (I've tried) and my metacity skills are atrocious :)

I forgot to mention that you need a newish version (0.90.2 or later) of the murrine engine. How you go about getting it depends on your distro.

Ubuntu debs:

If you're not on ubuntu and you don't want to compile, you may have to wait a little bit for your distro to catch up.

Possible temporary fixes: if you're using 0.90.0 or earlier, try commenting out the line. If you're on 0.90.1, your hiccup may be fixed by altering "@tooltip_bg_color" on line 80 to "#ffe5c0".

Try Sans Bold and in the GNOME Appearance Preferences manually enter a size of 8.8.

This seems to be the largest value that does not break the theme.

I personally use liberation sans (they're available with most distros) with a value of 8.6 regular for applications, 8.6 bold for the metacity, 9 for documents, and 9 bold for the desktop. I like small fonts, I used the artwiz fonts for years :) - Dec 22 2008
I'm not sure what you mean by that :) - Dec 22 2008
I know about this problem. The metacity is based on 2000 Look, a theme made in 2006 when smaller resolutions were common. I'm working to create a better alternative. But in the meantime either use a smaller font or use another decoration. (I like Mist ;)

There are two ways of installing a theme:

1) Download the archive and simply drag it over the GNOME Appearance Preferences dialog.

2) Manually extract the archive in ~/.themes

Where is it that the background is grey? If you mean the background of the website, then that is not altered by this theme. Check your firefox settings.

If you mean the menu that appears when you type an address, that's intentional.

If it's something else, please be specific. - Dec 14 2008
Credits for the look really ought to go to SzerencseFia's LUX, from which this theme's colour scheme is derived. He or she has done a stellar job of balancing dark colours with the limitations of GTK. - Dec 11 2008

The download link works now.

It's a nice theme but the gray on gray unfocused list items is a little too obscure for my tastes. Also, maybe a little brighter prelight on the toolbar buttons.

The scrollbar background in firefox is also too dark. Setting an appropriate value for bg[ACTIVE] fixes this on clearlooks and non-integrated scrollbar murrine. I'm not sure if the fix works on the integrated scrollbars. - Dec 31 2008

That was the fastest update. Ever.

But you really should take it slower, and be more careful. (I know I'll sound like an ungrateful bastard now. Apologies in advance.)

Take a look at the left side of the minimize button on the metacity. With small fonts there's too much space there and with large there's too little (in comparison with the space on the right side of the close button).

Also, I can't say how exactly, there's something off now. I think the highlight is not centred, and it's not my font settings. Unfortunately I overwrote the old version. Can you post both metacities? I may be able to explain what I mean better if I can see both. - Dec 30 2008
This is a lovely theme. Two suggestions (feel free to ignore):

1) The metacity is too bulky. A smaller version would be nice.

2) The text[SELECTED] is white, which really doesn't provide good contrast, at least on my display. I think they should be black like the menus. Perhaps you could adjust the value, making it slightly darker (for white text) or lighter (for black).

Voted good, of course. - Dec 29 2008

Due to ignorace (I assume it's more likely than malice) Milk pixmaps have come to be treated as public domain in gnome-look. This is illegal. The laziness of the gnome-look editors is irrelevant.

I'm not picking on you personally. I'm just tired of the gnome-look users constantly disabusing copyrighted material, ignoring licenses, and essentially stealing other people's hard work. You seem to be an honest chap which puts you on the good column of my book. (Not that I have a book, mind you, that would be weird :)

P.S. I know how hard it is to get all the permissions for Milk themes. I tried a year ago and promptly gave up.

P.P.S. I've been contacted five (5) years after I stopped working on a GPL'ed project by someone who wanted permission to port it to BSD. I miss those days. - Dec 07 2008

I love the Kamel icons, but they haven't been updated in ages and are woefully incomplete. I switch to them from time to time, for ol' times sake.

The window decoration is just a simple hack of Dust, as I'm absolutely crap with pixmaps. However, the maximize is just an up arrow. What would you wish the restore to look like? An arrow pointing down or a dash would look too much like a minimize button. If you could whip up an alternate button in accordance with the others, I'd be more than happy to use it. - Nov 10 2008
It's not a bug, it's a feature :)

The new murrine engine supports real widget transparency, which I should've turned off. I'll do so in the next update, but I have a couple of other little fixes to write first.

In the meantime, open the gtkrc and change line 95: "rgba = TRUE" to FALSE.

Thanks for the catch. - Nov 10 2008
Good question. Any recent (6 months or so) SVN build should be fine.

Of course, the first thing to do is try the theme out and see if it works. It's quite possible that your distribution already has a compatible version.

Failing that, you can compile the engine yourself from SVN, or hunt down a package appropriate to your distribution.

Best of luck. - Nov 09 2008
Liberation Sans, Fedora's font. Just pick up the official tarball and dumb the .ttf files in ~/.fonts

In GNOME Appearance Preferences use regular, size 8.6 (which for some reason GNOME transforms to 8.59961!) for Application, bold 8.6 for Desktop & Window, regular 9 for Document.

Hope this helps. - Nov 09 2008
I followed your advice. I don't think it's going to break anything. I'm not even sure why the "style" option is there in the first place, it's a relic from clearlooks for choosing between gummy, glossy, and classic. - Nov 09 2008
