Really nice work. My only criticism is that the button and text areas, perhaps, look a little extra square and simple compared to the soft and round flower background. - Feb 23 2006

This update seems to have messed up the font-color of the menu's in the Gnome Menu. When selected, the font becomes white, just like the background-image, making it virtually impossible to read.
It remained black when selected in version 1.5. - Feb 23 2006

As far as the panel issue goes, I would need a screenshot to comment on it, though I really doubt it has to do with the icon theme, but maybe the GTK theme and/or theme engine. - Feb 21 2006

I'd say the panel(s) definitely need a skin of some sort to go with the rest of the theme's "glassy" appearance. I also think the progress-bar and sliders might be a little bit too different from the rest of the theme, both color-wise and skin-wise (they look plastic-like, whereas the rest of the theme is glass).
But a great start. - Feb 15 2006

Great job! I particularly like the Unified-style metacity theme.
Only criticism I can think of would be the buttons/tabs.. They're awfully squared-like for an OS X theme - but that's something I might just hack myself and toss you the result :)

I wish you would've put as much work/effort into this one as you put into the Ubuntu version of this desktop. While this is a much appreciated addition of winter-like wallpaper for gnome falling on a dry spot, i still feel the transparent tux looks misplaced and poorly implemented - especially compared to the Ubuntu equivalent. Anyway - I hope this is useful in some way or another :)

No offense, but I find the title of this theme rather misleading - since Gnome's new default engine is Clearlooks, and this goes in an entirely different direction than Clearlooks & Clearlooks-Cairo.. That having been said; nice job. - Dec 19 2005

I see two reasons to post this kind of artwork: 1. It's ever slightly amusing to people who actually use this site and therefor gnome and 2. To show that OSS community doesn't hold a grudge. The second doesn't mean I don't, like most, think Linus is insane for even joining the debate to begin with, let alone bashing Gnome the way he did. He has nothing to do with it. I found the "Desktop Nazi's" artwork kinda funny - even if both Linus and the author are close to being out of line. - Dec 14 2005

Hmm, I've managed to combine the two themes now and it actually looks rather well, to me. My only trouble is the fact that I for some odd reason can't get the rounded corners to look right, instead i get a small white triangle to fill the void left by the rounded corner png's - which also goes for yours and a few other recently added themes here. I'll keep working on it, and upload if I get it working. - Nov 15 2005
I like it too, but I'd say that the theme combines two very different current philosophies: simple - and eyecandy. The buttons are nice eyecandy, but with the rest of the theme being so simple, it looks a little out of place. So maybe gloss up the background - like seen here:

I honestly don't see what's stopping the lot of you from doing this theme. It is an even bigger mystery to me, why the metacity theme shown, among other things, weren't just created to begin with, as it would've been easier than drawing it by hand and letting others cut them out of the screenshot.

If anyone, the author in particular, is interested in trying to create the theme shown, please let me know. I'd appreciate it if each part this mockup consist of, if more than one, were released. - Nov 09 2005

Out of curiosity - does this mockup illustrate any real theming, E.G. did you bother to actually make that metacity theme or just draw it by hand? Either way, I like it - though I find that your proposal isn't as much a re-doing of Gnome, but a relatively simple customization job. - Nov 08 2005

Actually, it seems I cannot. Nor can I, as of this moment, make any other icon theme, including Gnome's own semi-official "Crux" and/or Crystal Clear themes display an icon for the "show desktop" button, which is what I'm assuming you were referring to. I apologize and I'll let you know if/when I fix it. - Sep 11 2005
You can either do "./" from a terminal in the extracted directory, or you can double-click it in gnome and select "run". Third option is manual install; copy the gtk2 and metacity folders to ~/.themes and the icons to ~/.icons - Sep 11 2005

I don't quite feel the need to have the Microsoft Windows "START" menu on my Gnome desktop.. I don't even recall anyone using it, ever saying anything fully positive about it, all i've heard is bad. On top of that, why not just run XPDE or whatever it's called, then you'll have pretty much the same as you're proposing for Gnome..

Some of us would appreciate a clarification of how you made this theme, despite the fact that I don't particularly like it. - Aug 09 2005
I may be wrong, but after looking closer at the screenshot, I'm left to believe that the screenshot is of nothing but a Macintosh running Nautilus, Gimp etc. and therefor has very little to do with Gnome, let alone Linux.
On top of this, the theme has several problems, one being the obvious font-color used on active tabs; white doesn't go well with light blue.

First off; There is a gnome apps site, just like there is a kde apps site. The url is and works almost exactly the same way does.
Secondly, I would suspect some of the most fundamental problems with your "program" here, is that A. It serves little to no purpose, and changes very little for the user. B. It's an aMSN "extension" so to speak, and therefor has no real place on this website and C. It aims to make Gnome or KDE function/appear the same way Windows XP does, and very few to none of the people registered, and therefor voting, has a desire to make Gnome, KDE, aMSN or Linux look, feel or smell like Windows XP. - Aug 08 2005

Will someone, preferably umboody, explain to me What In The Hell this theme has to do with Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is just another distribution, that happens to use Gnome as a default desktop!

I can empathize with people that create themes and wallpaper/splashes and label them "* Ubuntu *", because they contain or relate to the Ubuntu project. But the kind of usage seen here, seems to come from nothing but ignorance. - Jul 27 2005
