Honestly, this is a combination of the best elements of Keramik. I hope either this or Plastick become default in 4.0 or 3.3.

Great job on it!

BTW: Does anyone have many screenshots of TK on a high bandwith server, I want to post some on the Lindows forums and urge them to switch from Keramik to Thin Keramik. - Mar 10 2004

I'm very pleased with what Lindows has been doing in the past year and very happy that you are working for them. Much more so than SUSE. Why? SUSE just isn't as focused on the desktop as Lindows and they definitely don't have the same level of dedication. - Jan 18 2004

I'm also wodnering, will 1.1 be ready for 3.2 or will 3.2 ship with 1.0? ANd finally will it be the SVG format that KDE 3.2 will ship with or will it still be PNG? - Jan 17 2004

GTK-QT Theme Engine

GTK1 Themes by davidsansome 280 comments

This is pure bullshit.

"KDE PEOPLE" do understand that it is too cluttered in some areas and this has greately improved in 3.2 and it is a priority, and will continue to improve. And don't you see that Qt themes on GTK/GNOME WOULD LOOK THE SAME AS QT THEMES ON ANY QT/KDE APPLICATION, wtf are you talking about looking horrible on GTK, they would look the same and there are many attractive Qt themes.

Also GNOME and GTK if anything are not based on any GNU philosophy, earlier versions were a lot more configurable and cluttered than even KDE. Also KDE is much better at following the GNU aka UNIX philosophy than GNOME. That philosophy has nothing to do with clutter, but jus says that there should be small apps for each task. GNOME is a bloated beast when it comes to this, almost every application foolishly reimplements many common things instead of using common classes like KDE applications.

"while qt is c++, propietary, and ugly, cluttered, ram comsuming, with ten thousands apps,"

Are you totally retarted or just love flaming about stuff you have no idea about. Qt is by the GNU project's standards more free than GTK+ it is only proprietary if you make proprietary software. Ugly? Hello the toolkit has themes it is not ugly in itself, you might say that this "theme" is ugly but not the toolkit. Ram consuming? GTK+ is slower and tends to consume at least as much ram. Ten thousand apps I believe is a compliment.

"Like in kde theres 4 media playres. noatun, kaadoble, and i dont know what others, theres 2 text editors, kedit, kate.. In gnome t heres one video player, totem (based on gstreamer or xinelib), one media player, rhythmbox, one text editor, gedit, one email client, evolution, etc etc....Cmon... I think this is a big mistake.-- Although some people find it useful.."

Yes, different developers and people have different needs. There is nothing wrong with this and it is in fact a positive thing. Rather than have one big bloated app that has what the developers think is everything, I would rather have more catered to specific audiences. Some of the apps you mention are not in the standard KDE distribution anyway, they are in places such as extra gear. This is OK. But I do agree that the standard KDE distribution should limit applications with a similar function unless they are radically different. - Jan 05 2004
GTK-QT Theme Engine

GTK1 Themes by davidsansome 280 comments

I've been waiting for something like this for ages! I didn't know it was even possible until you came along and created this engine. Sure it's not perfect, but it's a brilliant piece of software, especially for its stage in development.

I was also under the impression that some Qt themes, simply couldn't be translated to normal native GTK+ themes, by using Qt for drawing, do you eliminate this problem? Or has this problem just been a figment of my imagination? Can any KDE/Qt theme be recreated for GNOME/GTK+ to look and feel the same without software such as yours? Either way its a great step forward KDE users wanting a consistent looking desktop no longer need to be limited to only a few themes that have multiple versions and theme creators no longer need to create multiple versions.

THANK YOU! I hope that KDE distributions will use this in the future, perhaps as early as the April releases in order to give a more unified desktop experience. - Jan 05 2004

While thsi si certainly a worthy request for the best OSS strategy game available, this really isn't the place for it.

Freciv is not even related to KDE, it is a GTK program. I suggest you post this on a news site such as PCLINUXONLINE.COM, MADPENGUIN.ORG, GNOMEDESKTOP.ORG, SLASHDOT.ORG and NEWSFORGE.ORG.

I am not trying to discourage you, its jsut that here on KDE look there are far too many things which do not belong here and I don't want to encourage this even if it is still something important. I think this is an abuse of KDE's popularity. - Oct 12 2003

You have some serious problems, not only are you using profanity to express your opinion and defining someone's sex by their choice of icons and calling icons homosexual (gay shouldn't be used to call something stupid) but you fail to aknowledge that your opinion is not a fact or absolute in any way.

It is just that, an opinion, last time I checked people have differnet opinions and there is not one right and wrong, especially when it comes to looks. I personally think this icon set is great, but I don't think Noia sucks at all and it is evident that you are in a minority, Noia has recieved tens of thousands of downloads and an excellent rating.

It's not on the developer plan but I'm sure that tehy would let you have these added to 3.2 since icons don't really have bugs (not in the sense that they will crash your computer) style bugs and usabiltiy bugs are entirely different. - Sep 22 2003

Too bad about this: and this they really take away from the suefulness of the navigation panel. But otherwise, I can see this easily implemented in the navigation panel. Simply click to ad d new tab and point it to an html file with the links you want. - Sep 20 2003

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mononoke 26 comments

Well, I guess the developers don't really think it's necessary to have "Create icon on desktop" option, it's no big loss for me, I don't have any problem makinga shortcut, however I was hoping it would be implemented for the newbies.

The bug was closed as a WONTFIX.

Ona more positive side this bug I reported about the Run Command was fixed.

Just as many of your bugs were fixed, existed or were already being worked on. ;) - Sep 09 2003
Run Command...

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mononoke 26 comments

The run command needs this option, it is not very hard to implement and I don't think it will confuse anybody, I've showed it to all 5 of my family members and not one was confused by the "Create desktop shortcut" command, they understood it perfectly and thought it useful.

Now, the problem is now with options in themselves, the problem is when those options are not implemented well and when they are in places that they do not belong. Usability != Fewer features It simply means that the features present are well implemented from both the user and developer perspective and that they are where they belong.

I am a strong supported of usability, check out my comments here: But, I really don't think this would be a problem.

Furthermore, this would do more than make a shortcut, it would make a shortcut, it would make one with the options from the run command. - Sep 09 2003

But, one warning, don't post more than one problem in one bug report, it tends to get messy and people vote for it but nobody knows which part their voting for and closign the report would require each feature you mention to be resolved.. etc.

Run Command...

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mononoke 26 comments

MS RUN sucks the most and I find for example that their "Browse" button is a clear "does not belong here", all ti does is allow you to browse to a directory and than open it using the run command.

Anyway, IMO, I think the adding to quicklaunch and Kicker is going a bit voer board, but the add to desktop option is excellent and I can think of many times I've needed to use it.

Especially on SUSE which doesen't use the KDE menu and so it is often ahrder finding KDE applications.

I also think that the "add desktop shortcut option should be more powerful. The iconc reated should have all the options in the "Options >>" section of the run command set. So if I had my run command set to run that programa s root and "create desktop shortcut" was selected I want the desktop shortcut to also default to running as root and in the properties allow em to change this

Basically, the new desktop shortcut should have the same properties as the run command had when the "Ok" was pressed. - Sep 07 2003
Run Command...

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by mononoke 26 comments

Okay I submitted the bug for you, sicne I didn't find it in the database at

I also submitted a bug about including a "Known Applications" section like the GNOME Run Dialog.

Both can be found in my bug list here:

If you would like to add something or want to say something completely different please tell me and I will close it or you can leave a comment.

P.S: I agree that every option he listed except [ ] create desktop shortcut does not belong, but that one really does.

Most times when a user uses the RUn command is when he or she does not find the application in the menu or wants to run it as root or a at a higher priority.

Creating an icon on the desktopw ith those settings such as a higher priority or as root would make it much faster and easier for the user.

Again, great idea, I really hope ti can make it in 3.2. - Sep 07 2003

I very much like #1, I thik the rest are becoming too complicated and besides putting it in quicklaunch or on the Kicker can easily be done once you have a desktop icon.

- highlight column headers like buttons.

Example: I open "Find FIles" now my mouse passes over the name column header, it should have two horizontal stripes top and bottom like buttons.

- highlight slider controls when mouse passes over them. The little thing that you move on a slider should also be highlighted when the mouse passes over a slider area

- have some way to differntiate between tolbar rows. Maybe a bel like in Keramik, but hopefully not as strong of a bevel.

- scrollbar should also be highlighted like buttons, with two vertical stripes - Sep 06 2003

What I like about Plastik the most is it's mouse over highlighting, for example when I'm near a checkbox it immidieately highlights the checkbox, making it obvious for me that when I click with my mouse it willa ctivate or dectivate the checkbox.

This style also stays out of my way, is attractive and more usable than others. - Sep 06 2003

Karamba & Superkaramba by ageitgey 326 comments

I don't realy know anything about XML, I just know that gDesklets and Konfabulator both sue it and Qt Designer uses it for the GUI files, so I thought it was the best format to sue if therre is a theme creator.

I don't really know if that makes it eaier on the developer or user in any way.

It seems pretty simple as is, even I can make a small applet like:

karamba W=140 H=20 #I am commenting! :p w = width and h = height these define the size of the theme
text value="SK is super easy!! " #just tells karamba to put "SK is super easy!!" in the space just created

I love commenting, it helps me read what I write even if I really write nothing :)

Anyway, this is even easier than in gDesklets, but I don't know if that's true for long programs too.

I don't think that the mroe SK like programs the better they will be. I think that if isntead of developers making SK like programs tehy would jsut improve SK, than SK would be better than what other SK like programs could be. But, anyway my biggest arguement is that if there are alot of SK like programs themes would be incomatible and there wil be only a few for each program instead of a lot for one. But, I don't really know, that's probably wrong ;(

Karamba & Superkaramba by ageitgey 326 comments

Both scripting and program is in C++, jsut try it to see what features I'm talking about.

That theme editor is not complete, but i think it's a great start and that's defitnely my favorite thing about it.

It also says" and more with all specs based only on QT and KDE" I don't know if SK doesen't also do this, but if it doesen't this sounds like a good thing.

Also, will someone tell me, what are the disadvantages fo using the XML format to make the GUI instead of the current way?

And finally, and most importantly THANK YOU, I like and use your program daily, I ams orry if I appeared ungrateful, I just want Linux and KDE to succeed as much as possible. With Konfabulator on mac, Objects Desktop from Stardock and Samurize on Windows, and gDesklets on GNOME it's a tough competitive world for these kinds fo apps and having no clear application for this on KDE makes it a bigger challenge for developers and users and in total there will be fewer themes for each. This is why I want KDE to have only one program that is the best on any platform.

I also hope that maybe if SK isn't included in 3.2 due to it's novelty, i defintely hope tos ee it in 4.0, if it's officially endorsed it will have an even larger userbase. - Sep 05 2003
